OKLAHOMA CITY —
Oklahoma’s attorney general is putting citizens on alert after reports that out-of-state roofers are coming to Oklahoma, posing as local companies. The alert said that some of the people who have come to the state to make repairs after Oklahoma’s recent storms should not be trusted.Local roofing company owner Henry Staggs said a reputable contractor will always offer a list of customers so potential clients can ask questions.”I’ll give anyone the name and phone number of our insurance agent, the name and phone number of our sales rep at the supply yard, and I keep about four or five names, at least, of customers,” said Staggs, who owns Caliber Roofing in Moore. “If they want more, I’ve got a filing cabinet full.” He said companies who do business in Oklahoma City are required to register for a solicitor badge.”There is jail time and a fine involved if you don’t,” he said. The attorney general’s office said some crews are stepping up their crooked ways by stealing the names of established Oklahoma companies, sometimes using their logos and addresses.Staggs said customers should look out for companies that say they can get customers money.”What disturbs me the most is when I get customers who say that guy’s going to put money back in my pocket,” Staggs said. “We don’t have no part in that, but there is a lot of that going on.”He said the practice is insurance fraud and no one needing repairs should let anyone start roofing work without making some calls to find out as much information as possible. He said customers should also be concerned about any repairman who offers to pay their insurance deductibles.
